We sort of missed the traditional mid-August back to school events. Now we're smack in the middle of Labor Day celebration. Let's have a sale!  But let's also not forget Pluto, Earth, and the other wonders of nature worth documenting in your paintings. Even if just imaginary.

Enhanced Landscapes - Paintings over Rendered Terrains or Photographs

More Pluto - Less Caffeine

Just a reminder: we're still flying through Space way out there.

In fact, if you thought the fly-by encounter in July was historic and epic, I think we're in for an even greater treat. Read this:

NASA’s New Horizons Spacecraft Begins Intensive Data Downlink Phase

If you liked the first historic images of Pluto from NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft, you’ll love what’s to come.

Seven weeks after New Horizons sped past the Pluto system to study Pluto and its moons – previously unexplored worlds – the mission team will begin intensive downlinking of the tens of gigabits of data the spacecraft collected and stored on its digital recorders. The process moves into high gear on Saturday, Sept. 5, with the entire downlink taking about one year to complete.

“This is what we came for—these images, spectra and other data types that are going to help us understand the origin and the evolution of the Pluto system for the first time,” said New Horizons Principal Investigator Alan Stern, of the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) in Boulder, Colorado. “And what’s coming is not just the remaining 95 percent of the data that’s still aboard the spacecraft— it’s the best datasets, the highest-resolution images and spectra, the most important atmospheric datasets, and more. It’s a treasure trove. ”

Even moving at light speed, the radio signals from New Horizons containing data need more than 4 ½ hours to cover the 3 billion miles to reach Earth.

Now is the time to imagine. The time to dream. The age of Acquarius!
We close our eyes and see some photos that challenge our imagination. Or do they?

Here are some ideas you may want to try.

Take a picture of your bowl of morning cereal, Have a mix of rugged landscape from corn flakes, with lean milky snow fields, and add some deep valleys of chocolate syrup.

Step out of the house and look at the concrete floor. There are patterns with varying brightness, looks like a eprfect setting for a canyonland-style experience. Monument valley 2.0

Look up in the Sky... it's a bird! an airplane, a cloud! or is it just another world?

There are so many ways around us to help get creative!  Here's a look at come concrete area in my backyard:

More News: What's New!

We have started the long road to developing the next major version of Howler. It will probably be version 10 at some point, perhaps early January'ish. We want to share some peeks and previews on occasion. Get ready, and send us feedback too and last minute requests for other new features and enhancements that you'll want to see.

First off, you'll want to be with v9.6 of PD Howler. That will give you eventually the lowest cost upgrade path to the next best thing.

In the tutorials above, one of them deals with animated caustics. You can alsready see them on the ground of the ocean floor. That's done by designating a stored animation as the animated swap. The Puppy Ray path tracing renderer will thus use the animated caustics as color channel in combination with the elevation map as given by the image or images in the main sequence. The elevation can be animated. The coloration (caustics) can be animated. Now how about the Sky above it all? When we look up, we're want to see animated refelctions of the water surface.

That will be coming in the next version. We already have it implemented. It's simply another animated resource: the animbrush.

Another example of whereby Dogwaffle is brush-centric. Think through the brush, and magic will happen.

Stay tuned for more.

The next generation of Howler will have some new focus on brushes too. And a whole lot more.

Another new feature:  Block interpolation (extrapolation?)
