Dogwaffler of the Moment: Joan Scarbrough

About Joan

Joan has spent a great deal of time in the outdoors until developing Multiple Sclerosis and was no longer able to visit wild places.
Painting is her way of doing so again.

She started doodling on the computer with different art apps when she found Project Dogwaffle and the freeware version of PD Artist.

Her Paintings celebrate her love of the natural world.  Fundamental to her painting is the desire to create a work of art that evokes a sense of peacefulness and serenity, drawing the audience into the images she creates.

See http://www.thebest3d.com/dogwaffle/dotm/JoanScarbrough to find Joan's DOTM page for more details and samples of her art.

The Curve tool revisited, with Project Dogwaffle v10

There have been many changes and improvements over the years with this particular tool, the Curve tool. Especially when version 7.1 was released, where the Curve tool received a major face lift. But even since then, more and more subtle changes and new features have been added. The latest as of this date, with Version 10 and RC33, is that you can store the current curve, in ways similar to storing other assets, such as storing and managing the current image, alpha channel, custom brush and animation. This tutorial re-introduces some of the key features, mostly focusing on the parts that work in both PD Howler and also PD Artist, i.e. without much on the animation side of things. The Curve tool in PD Howler does indeed have many more uses, for animated curves across key frames to track a moving target and blur it or do other things related to matte tracking and roto-scoping, to name a few.

We do have though the ability to create animated brushes even in PD Artist.

As of version 9, PD Particles also has this Curve tool. Some of what you see here can also be done with PD Particles' Curve tool.

How to make caves in PD Howler

Using the vertical mirror feature, we can have the upper half mirrored down to the bottom half side. With that in mind, we can create renderings of landscapes with spikes, and then flip it upside down and mirror it. The result looks like some fancy cave with stalagmites and stalagtites. Well, sort of. Close enough for many uses. This can be done in PD Artist too. With PD Howler, you can animate it, fly through it, and turn it around.

That's it, for now. Thanks for waffling and howling!
